THE YELLOW PERIL



           “Well! Well, well,”  Tissie said in a voice  brimming with
        pleasure, as she surveyed the landscape from the high seat, a
        wooden platform anchored to the limbs of an old oak tree, as
        if for the first time.

           Harry was too scared to notice Tissie or the view as she
        sat down next to him on the narrow bench of rotting timbers
        running the length of the platform. He was fighting vertigo
        by staring at the floor and holding fast to a tree limb that ran
        nearly parallel to the bench, forming a neat barrier between
        himself and the edge of the platform. His knees trembled be-
        neath loose-fitting trousers.

           “Well!” Tissie said again, blowing air out of her mouth and
        throwing in a sigh for emphasis. “Marvelous, just marvelous!”
        She didn’t seem to care whether anyone heard her or not.

           Harry heard her, but he was too busy peering through a
        crack in the floor boards to respond. He could see the ground
