Where the Dream Ends
kitchen. His daughter was getting dressed, and the stranger
was about to leave.
“What’s going on?” he demanded. There was a knock at the
door. “What’s going on?” he asked again.
He went to the door and opened it. A dirty and disheveled
man stood before him.
“What do you want?”
The man looked at Harry nervously then retreated down
the stairs.
Harry went back to the kitchen. The stranger slipped past
him and left. Harry stood face to face with his daughter.
“What’s going on?” She stared at him, but didn’t answer,
“What’s going on?” he asked, in a demanding tone. He re-
peated the question over and over, but the more he sought an
answer, the more she faded from view. At last, the dream ended
and Harry woke up sweating profusely. His wife was next to
him, sleeping soundly. After several minutes, he closed his eyes
and fell into a deep, dreamless sleep.
It was this dream that was on Harry’s mind now as he re-
turned to the building and walked up the steps to his old apart-
ment. As in the dream, he opened the mailbox. There were
several letters, but he resisted the temptation to go through
them. He rang the bell and waited, not sure what he was ex-
pecting, nor what he would say if someone actually answered.
He rang the bell again, but there was still no answer. He
backed down the steps and looked into the living room win-
dow. The blinds were drawn, but through the slats he could
