Lovers
to shoulder like lovers, talking in whispers. Laura would tell
Brian about her latest boyfriend, and she would share intimate
secrets with him about her dates, so that sometimes, by the
time he left her house, he was sick with desire.
He wasn’t sure why he stopped by to visit Laura today, ex-
cept that he was feeling a need for some kind of intimacy with
a girl. Earlier, he had told his friend Gary that he would be at
his house at two oclock. He knew if he stopped it would make
’
him late and Gary would be angry, but he did it anyway. By the
time Laura sat down at the table he was angry with her and
himself.
“I hear you’ve got a new boyfriend,” Brian said, looking di-
rectly at her. He knew he shouldn’t be talking like this in front
of Laura’s mother.
“So,” she replied, more a challenge than a statement of fact.
“I thought you were going out with Rick,” he countered.
She glared at him. “What’s it to you?”
“I don’t know. You’re just always going out with someone,
that’s all.”
“I have to wash my hair,” she said, glaring at him and get-
ting up from the table.
“Why don’t you have lunch with us?” Laura’s mother inter-
rupted, trying to break the tension.
“I’m not having lunch,” Laura said, slipping past him and
back up the stairs.
“Would you like to stay?” Laura’s mother asked.
