Emerging into the sunlight and onto the freshly seeded
front lawn at the end of a continuous row of identical two-sto-
ry tract houses, Brian peered upward at the green behemoth
that was in process of being erected on the vacant field next
door. At that very moment, a crane was hoisting an enormous
piece of tubular steel into position while workmen on the
ground watched helplessly.
The 150-foot high water tower was to be the centerpiece
of a “park” that real estate agents assured Brian’s parents made
their 77x100 foot lot far more valuable — and thus more cost-
ly — than the standard 75x100 foot properties that radiated
outward in all directions. The agents hadn’t actually lied. Ul-
timately, the town did plant a lawn around the tower. And it
did afford some privacy from surrounding houses, as well as
a view, so to speak; but what the real estate hounds failed to
tell them was that the town fathers had never entertained plans
for a real park on the site. What they did say is that after the
