A Sea Change
The tile floor was cool to the touch, almost soft. The bed-
room door opened smoothly and without a sound. Harry
stepped into the living room leaving the door slightly ajar. A
dim glow from a kerosene lantern burned on the front porch
bathing the room in an ethereal light, just bright enough so
Harry could see that the door to Bob and Jean’s room was also
open. He wondered if Jean was home yet.
Earlier that evening, they left Jean down the beach at The
Frenchman’s, dancing up a storm with some crazy Italians. She
told Bob she wasn’t ready to go back to the villa.
“I’m glad you’re enjoying your vacation”, Bob, her husband
of three weeks answered, “but I need sleep. You can dance until
dawn if you want.”
Harry thought Bob’s reply was unconvincing; nevertheless,
they agreed to leave her alone after Ziggy the bartender as-
sured him that someone would drive her home.
Despite Harry’s wife’s reluctance to leave her, they drove
the rental car back to the villa, about two miles down the road.
Harry couldn’t tell if Bob was angry or not, but he seemed
okay on the ride home.
When they got back to the house, they took a walk on the
beach. Bob didn’t comment on Jean’s behavior; it wasn’t like
it was a surprise or something. He knew Jean for two years
before they married. Neither Harry nor his wife said anything.
They decided before going on vacation with their daughter
and son-in-law they would not interfere.
Afterwards, they sat in the living room and read for a while
before Harry and his wife excused themselves and went to bed.
