A Sea Change
Finally, a loud thud came from Bob and Jean’s bedroom
as what sounded like the bed crashed to the floor. Jean called
out one last time, and then, as quickly as the noise had begun,
there was quiet. What remained was a terrible silence, broken
only by the waves, undulating in a slow and sensuous motion.
Harry and his wife lay on the bed, unable to sleep, a deepening
sexual hunger awakening inside them.
During one of the quiet moments when a wave was far
offshore, Harry heard a tap on the roof, then another, and an-
other and another. A wave roared onto the shore and for a mo-
ment the hammering on the roof was lost in the spray. In what
seemed like a matter of seconds, the rain was pelting onto the
roof so that the sounds of the water falling from the sky and
the waves marching incessantly onto the beach was deafening.
Harry’s wife turned on her side and slowly began to caress
him. As the storm increased in intensity, the wind joined the
fray, casting palm fronds about in the trees. The tumult gave
Harry and his wife just the excuse they were looking for. Now
it was their turn, and they made love with a passion born of
the wind and the water, and as they came, they cried out with-
out a thought as to whether Jean and Bob could hear them.
When they were spent, they lay on their backs listening to the
remnants of the storm. After a while, the wind subsided, and
the rain stopped entirely. As Harry and his wife regained their
composure, they could hear snoring in the next room. In the
calm that followed the storm, the crickets once again took up
their steady rhythm, and there was the sound of the waves
breaking on the shore, and reluctantly, there came sleep.
