His Brother’s Keeper



           Whatever anyone might want to say about him, Harry was
        a loyal friend. He took his friendships seriously, and while he
        only counted a few individuals among his real friends, he con-
        sidered them lifelong relationships.

           That was one of the reasons Harry divorced his first wife.
        She was always too busy for old friends. As the years and dis-
        tance separated Harry and his wife from the people who mat-
        tered most in their lives, she never wanted to go out of the
        way to maintain old relationships. “They owe us the next call,”
        she would tell him. “What difference does it make?” he would
        ask her. “Just call. They’re our friends.” Finally, he would make
        the call, and of course he would be embarrassed because they
        would want to get together, and Harry couldn’t get his wife to
        agree to a time.

           Harry’s oldest friend Ed — they grew up together, went to
        the same grade school and high school — had taken a job in a
