“Well, thank you,” she said, mimicking a bow. “How come
you’re sitting all by yourself?” she asked.

“I don’t know anyone here,” Eddie said, “and anyhow, it
looks as if everyone is taken.” He looked at her. “What about
        you?”

           “Excuse me?”

“What about you? Are you taken?” She shifted restlessly
        before answering.

           “No. Not really.”

“I mean I’m with a few guys, but they’re just some jerks
I hang out with. Listen, do you have any quarters? We need
some change for the video game. I can’t get near the bar, it’s
        so crowded.

Eddie reached into his pocket and pulled out some change.

“Here,” he said, handing her three quarters.
“Great,” she said, counting out 75 cents and putting it into
his outstretched palm. Her fingertips brushed his hand remind-
ing Eddie how long it had been since he last felt a woman’s
touch. He looked into her eyes and smiled. She smiled at him.

           “What’s your name?” she asked.

           “Eddie. Yours?”

“Cathy. Nice to meet you, Eddie. Did you ever play?”

           “Play? He repeated, confused.
