“Please,” Harry said, “just one thing before I go.” She wait-
ed.
“In the bedroom…a long time ago…my sister painted the
heater pipes…black…black with green vines and flowers twist-
ing around them. I was wondering, are they still there?”
She shook her head. “No”.
He sighed.
“And in the living room, there used to be a mural on the
living room wall, a winter scene. My brother painted it. It was
there for as long as I can remember. Do you know who cov-
ered it over?” She shook her head.
“Where do you live now?” she asked
Harry thought before answering.
“California,” he lied. “I live in California. But I come to
New York every few years. I’ve been having dreams about this
place. One particular dream over and over. A nightmare, really.
I came back here to see if I could find out what it’s all about. I
don’t know what possessed me to break in.”
“I suppose whatever it is that possessed you to break in also
possessed you to...”
“You’re right,” I should go, he said, interrupting her. She’s
so young, he thought.
“Excuse me, if you don’t mind my asking, could you tell
me, how old are you?”
“How old do you think?”
