thing he wanted to know? Were there things better left un-
done?
Harry’s mother now lived alone, an aging widow whose
only happiness came from the occasional visitations by her
children. She was old and bitter, and though she claimed to
have nothing to live for, she had even less to die for.
He unfolded the letter again. “My dearest darling, how are
you?
“How are you?” How strange, Harry thought. Not “I love
you”, or “I miss you”, but “How are you?”
“A great deal has happened since I last saw you in the moun-
tains.”
In the mountains? That must mean where they spent their
summers in the Catskills when he was very young. Of course.
When else would she have had the opportunity to have an
affair? His father was gone all week, and she had all that time
alone.
“Esther has not been feeling well lately…”
Esther? Harry wondered. Who is Esther?
“I have had to take on a lot of responsibility for care of the chil-
dren.”
“Children! Esther! Esther was his wife. He was married?
His mother had an affair with a married man—with children?
The more Harry read, the more astonished he was. It was as
if this one letter was a summary of his mother’s entire affair. It
talked about the man’s family, his work, when they could meet.
