“You think I don’t hear?” she asked. Her expression had
changed. Now she was composed, and she gazed at him, men-
acingly.
“I…I don’t know,” he said, confused. Harry assumed her
remark meant that wherever she was in the afterlife she could
hear what other people said about her. In any event, this was
getting ridiculous. Harry had no idea why Ceil was here or
what she wanted from him.
“Well, I’ve got to go,” she said, rising abruptly. Harry
jumped out of his seat to help her. Remarkably, he was once
again able to touch her.
“Where are you going?” he asked. He tried to stop her from
leaving, but she insisted.
“I’ve got things to do.”
“But wait. What are you doing here? Who is this man?”
She didn’t answer. Her friend got up and followed her. He
shrugged his shoulders to indicate he was as confused as Harry
was.
“Tell your mother I said hello,” Ceil said, walking away
without looking back.
“She doesn’t know anyone any more,” Harry called out,
sadly.
“That was always her problem,” his aunt shouted back,
cryptically. Then she disappeared behind the kiosk.
