hand was weathered and dark, the new one white and smooth.
Harry laughed hysterically. Some things never change, he
thought. When she was alive, his aunt always carried outland-
ish newspaper clippings in her purse as timely conversation
pieces.
“Ceil, this is totally ridiculous,” he said.
“Not that side, stupid,” she said. “Turn it over. The oth-
er side.” She grabbed the page from his hand and turned it
around and handed it back to Harry with the front page facing
up. “Here.” Harry spread the sheet of paper in front of him. In
large print the headline read:
CAREY GRANT’S SHOCKING SECRET
Below the headline was a photo of a young and debonair
Carey Grant standing next to another man, equally suave and
debonair, but with a rectangular black band covering his eyes.
A caption under the picture identified the man as Carey Grant’s
secret lover. The newspaper was dated June, 1954.
“What is this?” Harry demanded.
“You see. I told you. You never wanted to believe me,” she
said, glaring at him.
When Ceil was alive, Carey Grant’s sexuality was a regu-
lar topic of discussion in Harry’s household. She and Harry’s
mother and their youngest sister, Sylvia, spent many afternoons
