Staying On

“Why don’t you go back to the city by yourself, Edith. I
        think I’ll stay on awhile.”

Edith was sweeping out the fireplace with an old whisk
broom. Her tired body stiffened as the weight of her hus-
band’s words sunk in. She stopped what she was doing long
enough so that some of the ashes scattered onto the carpet,
but she quickly recouped her losses with the dustpan and re-
sumed what she was doing before Liam noticed any break in
        her rhythm.

“What will you do?” she asked, trying to sound nonchalant.

Liam was standing by the kitchen counter, shuffling some
papers nervously. “I don’t know, Edith. Just once I want to
be here by myself. You know, when the first frost whitens the
        ground. I’ve never seen that.”

Edith was quick to respond: “Neither have I.”
