before, even recognized him. She was friendly. It was nothing,
a coincidence. He wasn’t looking for trouble. You’re sixty years
old. She’s not interested in you.
He wanted to tell Edith about the meeting, but he knew
she would just make fun of him. For nearly forty years she
had been making fun of him. He was always faithful, but he
liked to flirt, especially with pretty, young women. They made
him feel that anything was possible, even at his age, with their
youthful vigor. So he kept his meeting a secret. The dream and
the reality, he kept them both a secret from his wife of forty
years.

“You’re sure you’ll be all right?”
“I’ll be all right.”
“How will you get food?”
“The market is open every morning.”
“What if you need something in the afternoon?”
“I won’t need anything.”
“And what if something happens to you?”
“Nothing’s going to happen to me.”
“Call me.”
“Every day. I promise I’ll call you every day.”
There were other passengers at the ferry dock, and they
were listening. Liam was embarrassed. She was treating him
like a child.
