Staying On
again. Sure enough, fifteen minutes later as he was settling into
a book, the phone rang.
“Liam, are you all right?” She sounded frantic. “Where
have you been? I’ve been trying to reach you.”
“I’m fine Edith. I went for a walk. To the lighthouse. Calm
down.”
“To the lighthouse. That’s over three miles. It’s dark.”
“I know. It was so beautiful in the dark, Edith. The water
is so calm at this time of year. It sparkles with the moon out.
How are you?” he asked, wanting to appear concerned.
“Why don’t you ever want to take walks like that when I’m
there?” she pleaded, ignoring his question. “When I want to
walk, you’re always too tired.”
He was afraid that would be her response, but he didn’t
have an answer. When he finished his dinner, a feeling came
over him. He put on a sweater and meandered down to the
water and started walking along the beach. It was dusk, and
the western sky was so beautiful with the city lights in the dis-
tance, that he kept on walking, and before he knew it, he was
at the lighthouse. It was so quiet on the beach that he could
hear the rotor inside the lighthouse turning the dome. The
walk back was even more beautiful than the trip going, the sky
deepening in color from indigo to blue-black to black, and the
stars appearing one by one. It was incredible Edith. He didn’t
tell her that, he just thought it. You really had to be there to see
it anyway, the stars and the dunes on one side and the ocean
on the other, the sand below, and the sky, so much sky above.
