His Brother’s Keeper
* * *
Ed’s mother was at the hospital when Harry arrived. She
heard what happened, and she believed Harry, thank God. So
did the police. There would have to be an investigation, but
Harry was sure to get off. Ed would survive, the doctor said.
The bullet struck Ed in the head. It could have been fatal. Just
a fraction of an inch and it would have been a different story.
Ed was lucky.
Surgery took nearly eight hours. The patient would be in
intensive care for at least twenty-four hours. It would be at
least that much time before he would be able to talk to anyone.
For now, with his head wrapped in gauze, asleep, he appeared
to be resting.
Harry gave Stu a big hug when he arrived at the hospital.
Is he going to be all right?” Stu asked, looking devastated.
“I’m so sorry, Stu,” Harry said, burying himself in the
younger man’s arms.
“It’s all right,” Stu said, consoling Harry. “I know you
didn’t mean it.” This time it was Harry’s turn to cry. Just then,
the door opened.
“Oh, I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt.” It was the
young surgeon in charge of Ed’s care.
“That’s all right,” Harry said, composing himself. “It’s just
that I, uh, I’m the one responsible for this.”
“I’m so sorry,” the doctor said.
