to discover new meaning in their lives, to excel at something
that they once took for granted.
“Are you saying…?”
“No, no, it’s too early to tell anything like that. I’m just
saying…”
“You’re saying that Ed’s going to be handicapped…”
“Yes, of course, he’ll be handicapped in some way. But ar-
en’t we all…?”
“Mmmuh.”
“Ed? Ed, it’s me. Harry. And Stu.”
“Let me see him.” The doctor took Ed’s arm and checked
his pulse. It was what they always did.
“Yes,” the doctor said, picking up Ed’s chart at the foot
of the bed. “The surgery was a success. He’s going to be all
right.”
